Whistleblowers may report tax fraud against the federal government through the IRS Whistleblower Program. Successful whistleblowers may receive between 15 and 30 percent of the money recovered.
To qualify for an award, tax fraud whistleblowers must meet the following criteria:
- The amount recovered must exceed $2 million. This includes any fine, penalty, or costs.
- If the target is an individual, his or her income must exceed $200,000.
- IRS Tax Fraud Program awards are discretionary, so the IRS must decide to make the award.
Unlike many other whistleblower programs, tax fraud whistleblowers may rely on certain public information, such as judicial or administrative hearings, government investigation reports, media reports, or personal involvement. Awards based on public information are limited to 10 percent of the recovered amount.
